We will attend to the season of long dark nights by learning a variety of Slavic winter calendar and ritual polyphonic songs. Over the course of the three-hour workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn 4 or 5 songs in a choral context, with support from Ekaterina, Aleksandra, and Alison, learn about the cultural context of each song, consider pronunciation and musical technique and sing together. We welcome beginner through advanced singers. While sheet music will be provided, you can also learn by listening and singing along. No experience with music reading or knowledge of Slavic languages required.

Ekaterina’s devotion to the music of Balkan, East Slavic, and Near East Cultures can be heard in her ensembles BLISK and Meden Glas. Her love for braiding traditional elements with alternative music are found in her work with folk metal group Protokult and Russian folk-rock band Katüsha. She is based in Toronto. www.ekatmusic.art
